How do we communicate an idea without words? Using only black and white, positive and negative space, students had to communicate the idea of a particular noun, in these cases a person or animal. The students drew these out on paper, and then brought them into Adobe Illustrator to create a vector representations, or icons.

VDA Major Ryan explains what he learned about professional designers: "Graphic Designers are thinkers. A large portion of what designers do is to think and understand how visuals are communicated, how images make sense. If a designer can express what they are trying to give to the audience then the art is successful. Designing is secondary to thinking. The most important thing a graphic designer does is understanding how to communicate what their meaning is beforehand."
